Barrett Constructions are part of the new breed of specialised Australian Builders who have built outstanding houses for some of Australia's best Architects and Designers, including Bligh Graham Architects, Gomango Architects, Lindsay Clare, Jeremy Salmon and Ancher Mortlock & Woolley.
EVOLUTION OF BARRETT CONSTRUCTIONSBarrett Construction's core business principle of "best practice building" began it's evolution in 1983 with Stuart's apprenticeship where he was involved with building almost exclusively architect designed houses. After finishing his apprenticeship in 1987, Stuart focused on subcontracting. He was involved in supervisory roles in the building of three large architectural homes, two being Lindsay Clare designed homes. In 1989 Stuart's thirst for building, motivated him to apply for his own building license. In 1991, leading Australian Architect Lindsay Clare said this of Stuart:
In 1991 Barrett Constructions became an entity in its own right, with Stuart focusing on construction and his wife, Sandra in control of the administration. Stuart still has the thirst for building individually designed houses that are built to exacting standards. This has resulted in them earning a reputation as one of the leading builders of quality houses on the Sunshine Coast. In July 2001, two individually designed guesthouses, Lyola Pavilions in the Forest at Maleny designed by Gomango Architects was "Highly Commended" at the Sunshine Coast Sector of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Awards. One of the guesthouses you could literally call a 'tree-house' (as shown above) was built on a steep slope and demanded excellent construction & communication skills from all team members. In 2003, Barrett Constructions engaged Chris Bligh and Sonia Graham of Bligh Graham Architects to design four homes for the Laurels Estate opposite the Buderim Mountain State School. These houses have been designed to maximise the great views to Caloundra and to reflect the lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast. One the homes was purchased by Boystown Lotteries as a prize home. Recently in conjunction with Phillip Roxburgh of Canvas Residential Design, The Johnson Residence in Panaroma Ridge, Buderim took out the 'Custom Designed Homes 251 - 350sqm' and the Bluescope Award for 'Best use of Colorbond Steel' in the 2007 State Finals of the Building Designers Association of Queensland Awards. The Johnsons' had this to say about the their project:
